A 42-year-old Wauzeka woman was charged on April 23 in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of theft in a business setting of between $2,500 and $5,000.

Billie Mezera faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Mezera was the treasurer of the Wauzeka Lions Club from July of 2016 to March of 2017. The president of the Lions Club was contacted by local businesses stating that the club had not paid its bills and owed them money. The president then contacted the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and told investigators that those bills should have already been paid and that the club should have had more than enough funds to pay the bills.

The Lions Club estimated that it lost between $6,000 and $8,000, the complaint said. Mezera told the investigator that she had taken funds from the Lions Club for her personal use. She said she was not sure how much she took, but estimated it at $4,000, according to the complaint.
