George W. Lenz, 94, formerly of Manitowoc, was called to eternal life to be with his Lord on April 14, at his residence at Bluff Haven Assisted Living in Prairie du Chien.

 

George was born on March 6, 1924, in Wauzeka, the son of William and Amelia (Rose) Lenz. He graduated from Gays Mills High School and then entered WWII in the Pacific theater in the Philippines and New Guinee from 1943 until 1946. 

 

After the war he returned home and worked with his uncle at the Rahr Farms in Manitowoc. It was here that George married the love of his life, Erla (Stock) Lenz. Soon after marriage, he was employed at Wisconsin Public Service Co. out of Manitowoc and then Two Rivers for 37 years until his retirement in 1986. 

 

George was a lifetime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Manitowoc and served with many various boards. He was also a member of the Valders School Board, secretary/treasurer of the local union for Wisconsin Public Service Corporation and a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In retirement, George and Erla traveled to many different states, Europe, and attended many army reunions across this great country. He loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

George is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Erla Lenz, of Prairie du Chien; two sons Richard (Patricia) Lenz, of Eastman, and Randall (Connie) Lenz, of De Pere; six grandchildren: Garrett, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Grayson, of Houston, Texas, Patrick, of Houston, Texas, Eric (Sarah), of Menomonie Falls, Hillery (Clint) Needham, of Strongsville, Ohio, and Isaac Lenz, of Chicago, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren: Josiah, Jackson, Samuel, Silas and Eden Lenz, of Menomonie Falls, and Avery, Rory, and Molly Needham, of Strongsville, Ohio; two sisters Gertrude Koecke, of Prairie du Chien, and Dolores (Karl) Mockrud, of Oregon; two sisters-in-law: Cleo Lenz, of Tomah, and Vernice Lenz, of Fond du Lac; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents: William and Amelia Lenz, of Wauzeka; three brothers Charles Lenz, William Lenz and Dale Lenz; one sister-in-law Doreen Lenz; and one brother-in law Everett Koecke, of Prairie du Chien.

 

The family would like to thank the staffs of Crossing Rivers Hospice and Bluff Haven for all their love and compassionate care given to their dad. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 21, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1712 Menasha Avenue, in Manitowoc. Pastor Zachary DeArmond will officiate. Relative and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. A lunch will follow the service. Internment will take place at St. John’s Cemetery in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church towards the new roof or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien towards the building fund.
