Marie Anna (Schmelzer) Dickman died at the Guttenberg Care Center on April 5, 2018.

Visitation was Sunday, April 8, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, April 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Marie was born on July 16, 1923, in rural Guttenberg. She was the oldest of the seven children of Albert and Alvina Schmelzer. She attended country school in rural Garnavillo, leaving after the ninth grade with her sister, Bernadette, so that the family could go without a hired man during the Depression.

After the war, she attended Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids with her best friend Noreen and subsequently they founded Mareen’s Beauty Shop in Garnavillo. She married the love of her life, Henry Dickman, on Jan. 11, 1949.

To that union was born a son, Henry Mark, and a daughter, Reka Marie.

Marie was an excellent cook, farm wife, and devoted mother and grandmother. She loved her life and her family and friends. Above all, she loved the Lord.

Left to mourn her passing are daughter, Reka Hinshaw; grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Nyren and Mark (Kirsten) Hinshaw; great-grandchildren, Ella and James Nyren and Taylor and Kya Hinshaw; two sister-in-laws, Edna Schmelzer and Shirley Schmelzer; and honorary family Jim and Brenda Meier, and Mary and John Takeuchi.

Preceding her in death were her infant son, Henry Mark; husband; six brothers and sisters, Bernadette Stroschien, Joe Schmelzer, Leonilla Moser, Loren Schmelzer, Gerry Kann, and Jim Schmelzer; son-in-law, John Hinshaw; and her dear friend, Lorraine Meier.

She was adored by her family and friends and will be deeply missed.
