Neil James Hampton, 85, of Bloomington, died on Saturday, March 31, at Atrium Post Acute Care in Lancaster.

He was born on April 25, 1932, in Glen Haven, the son of Charles and Kathryn (Rauch) Hampton. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1950, and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1954. On May 25, 1957, Neil was united in marriage with Jeanne Reiser at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien.

He farmed for over three decades with his brother Bernard on their farm in Little Grant township. Spring was his favorite season—a time to cultivate the soil and plant the crops. Neil loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed playing euchre, watching Badger basketball and football, and Chicago Cub (World Champions 2016) baseball. He was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, the Bloomington Council #4416 of Knights of Columbus, and a lifetime member of the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jeanne; daughters Kelly (Ken) Nechvatal, and Tracy (Randy Musack) Hampton; son John (Carolee) Hampton; and grandchildren Adrien (Blaine) Duncan, Eamon (Christina) Nechvatal, Analese (Tripp Watson) Nechvatal, Jake (Ashley) Musack, Jackson Hampton and Aidan Hampton. He is also survived by his brother, Larry (Jean) Hampton; brothers-in-law Dayle Meyer, Cy Harris and Don (Edith) Ritchie; sisters-in-law Patricia Hampton and Nancy Reiser; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Neil was preceded in death by four brothers Bob (Georgia), Bernard, Paul (Emma) and Pat Hampton; six sisters Ann (Ralph) Johll, Donna (Charlie) Grass, Mary (Jim) Krogman, Ruth (Jack) Patterson, Jane Meyer and Rachel (Phil) Barr; brothers-in-law Earl Reiser and Howard Coffin; and sister-in-law Etta Harris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Bloomington with Fr. John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends may call on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be given in Neil's memory to West Grant Rescue Squad. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Bloomington is assisting the family. The Hampton family would like to thank Dr. Robert Stader and the staff of Atrium Post Acute Care for their exceptional care of Neil. Online condolences may be left at www.martinschwartzfuneralhomes.com.
