In a nail-biting February 8 game against Ed-Co, the Central girls won their first-round regional game. Central led Ed-Co 7-4 at the end of the 1st quarter, but Ed-Co came back in the 2nd quarter to take a 19-14 lead at the half. At the end of the 3rdquarter, Ed-Co still held a slim 27-26 lead. Central was able to limit Ed-Co to only three points in the 4th quarter and went on to win by a score of 32-30.

Gabrielle Lenth led the team with 12 points. Hannah Erickson had 10 points in the game, while Lizzie Gifford had two field goals for four points. Kiera Beck and Natalie Schroeder each had three points.

“This was a defensive battle, especially in the second half,” Coach Mark Wiley said. “The team responded in the fourth quarter by limiting Ed-Co to one shot each trip down the court and we contested shots as a whole.

Hannah Erickson led the team with eight rebounds. Gabrielle Lenth had six rebounds. Lizzie Gifford had five rebounds and Kiera Beck had four.

“We rebounded about evenly with Ed-Co throughout the game,” Coach Wiley commented. “We limited second chance points, which was very good considering the number of long rebounds there were off of missed three pointers.”

Hannah Erickson led the team with four assists. Natalie Schroeder had two assists. Kiera Beck and Gabrielle Lenth each had one assist.

“A credit to Ed-Co›s extended zone defense, it was hard to find open teammates with their aggressive play,” Coach Wiley said. “We did find success in dribble drives, which led to over half of our points.”

Gabrielle Lenth led the team with two steals. Hannah Erickson, Ariel Dennler, Lizzie Gifford, Kiera Beck, and Natalie Schroeder each one steal.

“Again, we forced turnovers in the second half, which led to offensive opportunities late in the game,” Coach Wiley said  “Natalie Schroeder hit a three-pointer with just under four minutes left in the game. Down one point with less than a minute, Hannah Erickson hit a three-pointer. Defensive rebounds huge in the last minute, and the team ran the clock out before they could get us to the free throw line.”

Central was due to play Kee High February 13, after the Register’s deadline.  Results will be in next week’s paper.
