Edward "Ed" Kenneth Hanson, 77, of Flint, Mich., died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at McLaren Hospital in Flint, Mich., of natural causes.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 19, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville and one hour before services on Saturday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20, at Immanuel United Church of Christ with burial in Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville is in charge of the arrangements.

Ed was born the son of Kenneth Edward and Harriet Rosina (Lieberknecht) on June 4, 1940, in Muscatine. Ed graduated from Columbus Junction Community Schools in 1958, and then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1962 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. 

On June 10, 1962, Ed was united in marriage with Elaine Kay Fischer of Garnavillo. The couple moved to Flint, Mich., in late June 1962, where Ed was hired as a product design engineer by the Buick Division, General Motors Corporation. While employed by GM, he held various technical and engineering management positions. After 44 years with GM, Ed retired in 2006 as an Engineering Group Manager and Program Manager of Specialty Vehicles. Throughout his career, Ed was always interested in all aspects of automotive business and design history; and owned, restored and showed several antique vehicles. He was a registered professional engineer in Michigan and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and other professional organizations.

Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elaine of Flint, Mich.; one son, Jeffrey (Margie Sharp) Hanson, of Flint; one daughter, Cynthia (Jeff) Kolb of Clarksville; one brother, Robert David (Claire) Hanson of Iowa City; two sisters, Ruth (David) Wilson of Iowa City and Charlotte Warren of Iowa City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, John Warren; and a step brother, James Warren.
