School facilities

project continues

on inside of buildings

By Ted Pennekamp

During the Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night, District Administrator Robert Smudde said that all of the roofs have been constructed on the buildings being built as part of the school facilities upgrade project.

Work continues on the inside of the buildings and the project is moving along nicely, said Smudde, who noted that the floors are being poured in the Prairie du Chien Area Performing Arts Center at the high school, and in the technical education area and band room in Bluff View. Also, piping, underground work and roofing are being done at Bluff View. Insulation, piping, electrical work and roofing are being finished in the performing arts center. Exterior doors and windows are being completed at the high school gymnasium, as well as flooring, ceiling work, mounts for basketball hoops and lighting.

The entire school facilities upgrade project is expected to be completed prior to Sept. 1, 2018.

The school board also discussed the low participation for the Prairie du Chien-Fennimore gymnastics team. There are seven members on the team this season, and the co-op with Fennimore will end this year unless the board decides to keep it going. The subject of the viability of keeping the Prairie du Chien gymnastics team will be discussed at an upcoming school board meeting when the athletes, coaches, parents and all other interested persons can attend. A decision on whether or not to continue the gymnastics program may be made at that time.

The board approved by unanimous voice vote of the official designation of a new student activity club called the Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA), which will be supervised by Adrienne Udelhoven and Heather DeBruin. Board members Christine Panka and Kyle Kozelka were not present.

The board also approved of $6,310.52 for new chromebooks for the high school.

In further discussion, it was noted that the annual Fallfire Art Contest in Prairie du Chien will next be held in the fall of 2018 at the high school at the same time as the fall musical.

Prairie du Chien sixth graders through their Festive Fridays at Bluff View collected 305 pounds of food and $120 for the Prairie du Chien Food Pantry. Prairie du Chien fourth graders raised more than 500 pounds of food for the Food Pantry in December.
