Two occupants of a vehicle that crashed into the Kickapoo River during freezing temperatures over the weekend walked away having little medical attention, according to Crawford County Sheriff’s Department reports.

On Dec. 30, at about 12:25 a.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on West River Road, south of Iris Drive, in the village of Bell Center. The reporting party stated the vehicle was in the Kickapoo River and there were two occupants trapped inside.

According to the sheriff’s department, Nathan Stellner, 24, of Gays Mills, was operating a 2012 Subaru Impreza Wagon southbound on West River Road. The vehicle began fishtailing on the snow-covered and slippery roadway after negotiating a curve, then went over a steep embankment where the rear end went into the river. The vehicle eventually became completely submerged in the river. While emergency services were responding, Stellner and his passenger, Jessica Loven, 25, of Gays Mills, were able to free themselves from the vehicle and walk to a nearby residence to keep warm due to the single digit temperatures.

Stellner and Loven were evaluated on scene by Ocooch Mountain EMS. No further medical attention was needed.

The vehicle was removed from the river by a private party and was a total loss.

Both parties were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. There were no citations issued.

The Gays Mills Fire Department assisted at the scene.
