A 29-year-old Viroqua woman was charged Dec. 15 in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of felony retail theft and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

Tiffany McKittrick faces up to three years and seven months in prison and fines of $10,500 if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, McKittrick, who is known to the loss prevention personnel at Wal-Mart of Prairie du Chien, was seen on surveillance cameras walking through Wal-Mart with a cart and placing merchandise into plastic shopping bags that were already in the cart.

McKittrick then went to a closed check-out aisle, removed the chain from across the aisle, and then exited the store, the complaint said.

McKittrick was seen on surveillance cameras loading the merchandise into a gold Toyota four-door sedan, which then left the area.

Later that evening, Crawford County Sheriff’s Department deputies saw the gold Toyota being operated by a man near the village of Rising Sun. The deputies stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver and the passenger, McKittrick. McKittrick kept falling asleep when the officers were trying to question her, the complaint said.

McKittrick was taken to Crossing Rivers Health and held until she could be medically released.

The next day, officers spoke with McKittrick, and she said she had purchased the items found in the vehicle with a gift card valued at $100, the complaint said.

Loss prevention personnel from Wal-Mart came to the Sheriff’s Department and took an inventory of the items, which totalled more than $1,300.

McKittrick was transported to the Crawford County Law Enforcement Center for processing. An inventory search of her purse revealed a container containing suspected marijuana and two white pills, according to the complaint. The pills were identified as Valium, which is a Schedule IV controlled substance.

McKittrick said she did not have a prescription for Valium. She also said she had taken two hits of marijuana and three Valium pills prior to going into Wal-Mart, according to the complaint.
