The Droppin’ of the Carp is happening for the 17th time this year in Prairie du Chien on New Year’s Eve. The festivities take place at Lucky Park downtown, from 8 p.m. to midnight, when the iconic frozen carp is dropped. (File photo)

The temperatures are frigid, but the fun and games won’t be this weekend as Prairie du Chien hosts its annual CarpFest.

A euchre tournament is offered Thursday, Dec. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hoffman Hall, while open gym and swim every day this week, also from 1 to 4 p.m. at the rec center.

But the big day is Sunday, Dec. 31.

The Early Bird Droppin’ of the Carp Party kicks off the city’s New Year’s Eve festivities from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Hoffman Hall, 1600 S. Wacouta Ave. This event is geared for youth to celebrate the New Year with their entire family and friends. Activities include arts and crafts, carnival games, noisemakers and hats, a pet therapy dog and a meet and greet with the Carp King and Queen. Also, kiss Lucky Carp Jr. for good luck in 2018 and enjoy carp samples or purchase carp corn, pizza, pop and hot chocolate at the concessions stand. Tristan the Magician will perform at 6 p.m. There is a small fee to attend the Early Bird Party, including a family discount.

Following the merrymaking at Hoffman Hall, adults and other cold-braving night owls are encouraged to attend the 17th annual Droppin’ of the Carp and pyrotechnics show at Lucky Park from 8 p.m. to midnight. Dress like you’re from Wisconsin: warm. There will be music, entertainment and a light show, along with a huge bonfire. Kiss Lucky the Carp for good luck. The grand finale will be the carp drop at midnight.

This fun-filled event is planned each year to bring friends, family and the community together to celebrate the New Year.

Anyone awake in time for brunch the next day, Monday, Jan. 1, is invited to continue their fun at the New Year’s Day Rotary Breakfast at Huckleberry’s Restaurant, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
