A small-town Christmas miracle happened Tuesday at the Crawford County Salvation Army office.

Jim Greenwald, a retired chiropractor from Prairie du Chien, now living in Madison, stopped in to visit coordinator Jen Kapinus. He had been so moved by a story about homeless families in the Nov. 29 issue of the Courier Press—particularly one single mother’s story of living in a tent—that he wanted to do something to address the needs in the county.

He brought along a check for $2,500 for the Salvation Army and asked Kapinus to distribute it where there is the most current need. He especially asked for his donation to impact children in homeless or desperate situations.
Kapinus said she already had several children and families with immediate needs already in mind.

“That this is happening, here, this day and age, I can’t believe it,” he said. “When I grew up, I didn’t have diddly-squat. When my (late) wife and I came to Prairie du Chien, we had to borrow the money to start my chiropractic office. This town was very good to us though. I’ve been so fortunate.”

Because he has done well in his life, Greenwald wanted to give back and, upon reading the story last week, he seized the opportunity to do so for Crawford County’s neediest.

Greenwald brought along his friend Sally Iverson, of Barneveld, who has no personal ties to the county. Yet, she personally provided $175 in gift cards to Kapinus for use at local stores where necessities can be purchased for the needy.
The couple would ideally love to see more people in area communities consider donating to families in need as well.

“I want this to stimulate other donations,” Greenwald said.

If you can’t afford to give financially, your time is just as valuable. Consider ringing a bell for the Salvation Army and signing up for a two-hour shift to do so. If interested, call 326-8321.

Donations will be accepted at 625 S. Dousman St. or by calling the office at this number.
