Elaine Inez Schroeder, 88, of Guttenberg, passed from this world to her heavenly home on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Andrew Preus. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at the Guttenberg City Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Elaine was born April 17, 1929, to Louis and Elsie (Kruse) Zittergruen in rural Garber on the family farm. She was baptized on June 9, 1929, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport by Rev. F.E. Damms, and later had her confirmation by Rev. Guetzlaf. Elaine graduated from Elkport High School on May 15, 1947. She then attended 12 weeks at the University of Dubuque where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught for five years in a country school in Jefferson Township.

Elaine was united in marriage to Russell W. Schroeder on June 3, 1952, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Together they were blessed with three children, Sandra, Rodney and Don. Together she and Russell ran Schroeder Hardware, the family business, for over forty years.

Elaine enjoyed a lifetime of cooking delicious meals for family, friends, and church gatherings. Her excellent holiday dishes have become traditions that will be passed down for generations. She was known for her ability to turn any type of wild game into a delicacy.

Elaine and Russ were blessed with many friendships made through the hardware business. She is remembered for her competitive spirit when playing Bingo, Fargo, and her all-time favorite, Euchre. Each person Elaine touched knew exactly where they stood with her; she had a way of saying things just as she saw them.

Elaine knew where she stood with God, and put her trust in the Lord Jesus. Her faith was foremost in her life, and carried her through the difficult times as her health failed.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sandra (Gordon) Sieg of Bettendorf, Rodney Schroeder, and Don (Chris) Schroeder, both of Guttenberg; eight grandchildren, Haley Schroeder (fiancé Dan Kregel) and Elly Schroeder, Greg, Alex, and Erik Sieg, Jennifer Martori, Jerry Schroeder (fiancée Jessica), and Paul Schroeder; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Sophia, Elise, and Malaya Schroeder; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Zittergruen and Lorna Peterson; brothers-in-law, John Ortman and Butch Rommann; many nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband Russell in 2005; granddaughter, Sadey Schroeder in 2003; brothers, Orville (Leone), Laverne (Anabelle), Marvin (Ariel), and Harlan Zittergruen; sisters, Delite (Morris) Rodenberg, Wanda (Gerald) Stence, and Lorna Rommann, brother-in-law, Lyle Peterson; niece, Marlys Friedlein; nephews, Louis and Duane Zittergruen, and Joel Ortman.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to “The Wave of the Future” Pool Campaign, to help support the community where Elaine and Russ worked and lived for so many years.
