Gary Gene Stewart, 77, passed away on October 27, 2017, at Ennoble Skilled Nursing Center in Dubuque, IA. Gary was born on September 21, 1940, in rural Garber, IA, the son of Samuel and Blanche (Hansel) Stewart. He attended Colesburg School and then entered the Army from 1960-1963.

On April 8, 1967, Gary was joined in marriage to Marilyn (Barnhart) at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. This past April, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They resided in Dubuque IA, and then in 1980 moved to Littleport IA, and then Elkader, IA, in 1999. 

Gary was a mechanic for 30+ years receiving his training while in the Army. He enjoyed fixing things, playing cards, hunting and fishing, shooting the breeze with everyone and most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Stewart; two children, Patty Schulte and Brian (Kristine) Stewart; five grandchildren, Allison Schulte, Orie Schulte, Brianna Stark, Logan Stewart and Tyler Stewart;  two sisters, Doris Ludovissy and Wanda Amsden;  sister-in-law, Leana Stewart; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Blanche Stewart; one brother, Roy Stewart; two brother-in-laws, Mervin Ludovissy and Lloyd Amsden and one nephew, Larry Purman.

A visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Elkader and after 10 am on Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport, with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. Inurnment was at Bethel Cemetery, rural Osterdock
