New clubhouse at Prairie du Chien

Country Club to open up a lot of possibilities

The Prairie du Chien Country Club may soon begin its reconstruction project whereby the entire clubhouse will be replaced with a brand new building.

Delta 3 Engineering of Platteville is the architect for the project, said Country Club General Manager Jim Maguire, who noted that the project will be privately funded, with the country club raising its own money.

“We have a list of interested investors,” said Maguire. “We are looking to raise approximately $1 million.”

If everything goes well, Maguire said that demolition of the current clubhouse could begin as early as Oct. 30.

“It will be new from the ground up,” said Maguire. “The current basement will remain.” Maguire said the old farmhouse portion of the current building is more than 100 years old. The rest of the clubhouse was built in the mid-1960s.

“The current clubhouse is outdated and not conducive to bringing in new businesses,” said Maguire. “We need a new facility.”

Maguire said the new clubhouse will be just under 6,000 square feet, which is about the same size as the current facility.

“We will have a year ‘round restaurant, which will include Friday night fish fries,” said Maguire, who noted that the new restaurant, working in conjunction with the recently built pavilion, will also be able to accommodate private parties, business parties, weddings and other special events.

“We will have the best value in town,” said Maguire. “Now, we can do big things. This will open up a lot of possibilities.”

Maguire said the new clubhouse should attract more golfers and restaurant patrons from throughout the region, who will not only enjoy the golf course, they will be impressed by the new clubhouse and pavilion as well.

The pavilion features a large outdoor dance floor under a tent and is attached to a building which includes a rustic looking bar room with tables, chairs and a bar built by club members. The building also includes a kitchen and storage space. The building has been renovated and upgraded from its years of service as a golf cart shed.

Prairie du Chien Country Club Incorporated has numerous share holders, and the Country Club Board of Directors envisioned a new clubhouse about eight to 10 years ago, said Maguire. “We are now healthy enough financially to be in a position to do this,” he said.

A contractor for the project has not officially been selected yet.

The country club has nine weddings already booked for next year. Maguire said that the deck attached to the old farmhouse will be moved and will become part of the pavilion building so that patrons can enjoy the relaxing view of the golf course.

Maguire said many items, such as coolers, tables, chairs, etc., that are in the current clubhouse will be utilized in the new facility.

Prairie du Chien Country Club began as a nine-hole golf course and had its grand opening on July 4, 1958. Built on the grounds of an old farmhouse in the hills, Prairie du Chien Country Club was redesigned into an 18-hole course by Gilmore & Graves in 1993.

Prairie du Chien Country Club is located just a few minutes south of Prairie du Chien, Wis. at 38485 Highway 18.
