James L. “Jim” Johnston, 82, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, on his 82nd birthday.

 

He was born Oct. 18, 1935, in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, the son of Leo and Florence (Heim) Johnston. Jim served in the U.S. Air Force. 

 

He married Rita Lippi on July 1, 1958 and to this union, eight children were born. Together they farmed near Harpers Ferry. Jim also worked as a fork lift operator for 3M Company for over 25 years. 

 

He is survived by his children, Michael (Brenda), of Ferryville, Eric, of VanWert, Ohio, Kevin (Bonnie), of Olympia, Wash., Lisa Valley, of Prairie du Chien, Steven (Sheryl), of Cocoa, Fla., Gregory (Teresa), of Cape Coral, Fla., Shawn (Tonya), of Rochester, Minn., and Valerianne (Duane) Mullins, of Prairie du Chien; his sisters, LaVonne (Don) Wegman, of Manchester, Iowa, and Judy (Carl) Czech, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

According to Jim’s wishes, a private family memorial service and interment will be held. Reverend James Weighner will officiate and military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made that will be distributed to some of Jim’s favorite charities. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
