Note: This is the second in a series of interviews with candidates for Guttenberg municipal offices in the Nov. 7 election. Following are interviews with three candidates for city council.

Mick Pierce

1. Why are you running for office? I am concerned about our community and I would like to help steer things in a positive direction. I am now retired and have the time to devote to being a council member.

2. How are you qualified to serve voters? First of all I am a taxpayer and lifetime citizen of this community. I served on the city council previously in the 1970s. My wife Carolyn and I raised four sons in this community, and I want to keep the community viable and a good place to raise a family.

3. How will you make a difference? I will make a difference by keeping informed on city issues and having an open mind on all topics. I'm willing to listen to all points of view. I believe in having the city enforce its ordinances and seeing that rules are fair and honest. I don’t have unrealistic expectations about how quickly change can be made, but I want to move the community forward. The mayor should set the agenda, and the council should support it or make changes as needed. Railroad issues should be addressed, street maintenance is important, and supporting our local businesses is a must.

1. Why are you running for office? With a new Mayor coming on board, I felt that it would be more prudent to keep as many current (experienced) council members as possible. City affairs have been progressing on an even keel, and I'd like to see that current projects proceed as smoothly as possible through their completion.

2. How are you qualified to serve voters? I have served on the city council now for almost 6 years. I try to be fair in the decisions I make. I listen to the concerns of the citizens of Guttenberg. I try to base my decisions on what would be the best for the majority of the Guttenberg residents, not just a chosen few.

I do have a college degree and have worked in the field of education for the past 25 years. However, the experience of serving on the city council for the past six years has taught me more about infrastructure, budget, city law and city ordinances than any degree ever could.

3. How will you make a difference? I'd still like to hear people's concerns, along with possible solutions, of course. I'd like to see the Garber Bridge project through completion. I'd like to help the new Guttenberg Pool become a reality. I'd also like to see the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital remain a municipal hospital. I'd like to see the remainder of the water mains updated and the streets repaired on a regular basis. I'd like the citizens to become more involved, and more educated about city government so they know that their tax money is not being spent frivolously. No decision is ever made lightly.

1. Why are you running for office? I have been on the city council for the last four years and the City of Guttenberg has some things I would like to see finished.

2. How are you qualified to serve voters? I've served on city council for four years. I've also served on the Guttenberg Fire Department for several years and have served on the 911 board for the last few years.

3. How will you make a difference? There is a concern for more affordable housing for senior citizens. We also need to keep improvements going on our streets, curbs and gutters, water and sewer mains. I will always keep an open mind and listen to the people when they express their concerns. My hope is to keep a positive attitude and serve my city to the best of my ability.
