A 32-year-old Boscobel woman has been charged in Grant County Circuit Court with 14 criminal charges including six felonies as the result of an automobile accident at a campground in Bagley on Aug. 12.

Stacy M. Smith was arrested on Aug. 12 in the River of Lakes Resort immediately after the crash. She posted bond and was released from jail two days later.

According to the criminal complaint, Grant County deputies were called to the scene at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Aug. 12.

Witnesses told deputies a sport utility vehicle was going at a high rate of speed on a campground road when Smith lost control on a corner and crashed into a tent.

A witness said there were seven people in the tent who were trying to get the vehicle to stop because Smith was attempting to back up when someone was underneath the front tire, the complaint said.

A man who said he was with Smith before the accident, said she was drunk. When he told her to go to bed, she got angry and took off in the SUV, he said, according to the criminal complaint.

Smith’s blood alcohol content was .18 percent, more than twice the legal limit of .08 percent.

All seven victims were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Three of the victims were then airlifted to University Hospitals and Clinics in Madison.

One victim sustained seven broken vertebrae, 14 broken ribs and two collapsed lungs. Another victim had a broken vertebra and a broken septum.

One witness said that Smith got out of the SUV after running over the tent, but then got back in and backed over the tent again.

According to the criminal complaint, one victim had a brain bleed that caused cognitive problems.

Several other injuries were sustained by the various victims.

The eight misdemeanor charges are regarding four victims. The six felonies involve the three victims with the most serious injuries.

If convicted, Smith faces up to 12.5 years in prison and a $25,000 fine for each of the six felonies. She faces up to one year in jail and a fine of $2,000 for each misdemeanor.
