On Sept. 22, at 7:20 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a traffic complaint of a red 2007 Ford Ranger pickup truck traveling southbound on State Highway 35, south of the village of De Soto, in the township of Freeman. The witnesses stated the Ford Ranger was swerving back and forth from the southbound lane into the northbound lane of traffic. The Ford Ranger was also traveling southbound in the northbound lane for approximately two miles and would occasionally sideswipe the guardrails.

While a deputy was preparing to initiate a traffic stop on State Highway 35 at Lietner Hollow Road, the Ford Ranger crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan. The Dodge Grand Caravan was being operated by Angela L. Johll, 33, LaFarge. Johll’s passengers were Tyler A. Johll, 31, a 1-year-old child and a 5-year-old child. The children were transported by private vehicle to Crossing River’s Health as a precautionary measure. The other occupants of the Dodge Grand Caravan were not injured.

The driver of the Ford Ranger was Timothy R. Schmitz, 64, Milltown, Mont. During the investigation, it was determined the driving behavior was a result of a medical related condition. Schmitz was later air-lifted to a hospital in La Crosse for the medical condition. Schmitz did not appear to be injured as a result of the crash.

This crash remains under investigation.
