Merton Dale Cota, Sr. dedicated his life to serving the U.S. government; spending four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, 18 years in the U.S. Air Force and 24 years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He received numerous awards for his hard work throughout his long career. Recognized for his sense of duty, responsibility and organization, and respected by his peers, he retired on Dec. 30, 2016.

 

 A beloved father, he is survived by his children Patricia Cota, Janine Mortensen (Chris) and Merton Cota, Jr. (Allison); and grandchildren Brandon, Ben and Chloe Cota.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Leota Cota; and brother, Gene Cota. 

 

The family will receive friends Monday, Sept. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bel Air Chapel of Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler, 12100 W. Center Rd., Omaha, Neb., with vigil service at 7 p.m. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be Thursday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., at Brodtville Cemetery, Prairie du Chien. Memorials will be directed by the family.

 

Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler Mortuary and Crematory, in Omaha, Neb., and Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home, in Prairie du Chien, are assisting the family with arrangements.
