Thursday, Aug. 31, was a monumental day for the Prairie du Chien business community, as the sale officially closed for Coaches Family Restaurant. The Dave and Joanie Skemp family ran the successful restaurant for 47 years, starting as a rootbeer stand in 1970. The family sold to Los Aztecas, also a family-run business that has two Mexican restaurants in Dubuque, Iowa, and one in Galena, Ill. Opening of the remodeled restaurant is expected some time in October.

Kramer Real Estate, of Prairie du Chien, and realtor Sara Boxrucker receive the credit for working with John Herrig Realty, of Dubuque, Iowa, in completing the transaction. The 4,300-square-foot building was listed on Kramer’s website for $495,000. The sale price has not been disclosed.

Though it was a good feeling to have sold Coaches Restaurant, Dave and Joanie Skemp said it was bittersweet.

“It’s kind of sad, but it’s a happy moment, too,” Joanie shared.

“We’re just thankful to all of our faithful customers and hundreds of loyal employees who contributed to the success of our restaurant for 47 years,” Dave said.

According to Dave, Coaches started as a rootbeer stand and, three years later, in 1973, converted into the homestyle dining establishment it was known for the longest.

“We put inside seating in in 1973,” Dave said, “removed the car port and expanded the kitchen in the ‘80s. We built a new dining area on the north side of the building in 1991.”

The Skemps also stated their appreciation to Kramer Real Estate for being so diligent in making for a smooth transfer of ownership.

And we wish good luck to Lorenzo and his family and staff in the future. These guys have done well; they’re going to be family people, which is important to us and to the community,” Dave added. “We’re glad to see it keep going as a restaurant.”

Lorenzo Dominguez and his nephews Hector and Manuel Moran are the owners of the new Los Aztecas in Prairie du Chien. They boast quality, authentic Mexican cuisine and margaritas, which are rated number 1 in Dubuque. Their realtor, John Herrig, said the family is “pleasant and happy to be adding to its present portfolio.”

“This is our fourth restaurant,” Lorenzo said. “We first opened in Dubuque in May 2000.”

In addition to its Mexican fare, food will include some popular American items such as burgers, fries, and chicken nuggets, for the kids, he noted.
