Though Central students got a summer break from classroom work, administrators stayed busy with myriad responsibilities including several related to the upcoming improvements made possible by the successful bond vote last spring. The Register asked Superintendent Nick Trenkamp questions about the work he’s doing to move the renovation project forward. Here are his responses:

What was done over the summer?

This summer a team of architects and engineers met with Central staff on three different occasions. These meetings were to develop the spaces that are being remodeled. Example: the science classrooms are being remodeled so the team of architects and engineers met with our science teachers to determine their curriculum, how they prefer to teach, tools they needs, and how they want their rooms set up. They then went back to their office and worked on the design. The next meeting they presented the updated design and asked staff if this is what they wanted. In the third meeting they provide 3D drawings of the spaces.

This summer we also started clearing out spaces in preparation for the remodel to begin.

What will be done during the 2017-2018 academic year?

The tentative timeline has bids being posted in December and bid opening in January. After the bids have been secured, construction will begin, possibly January or February. At this time we are hopeful we can have the commons area and kitchen completed in time for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

Why did you visit the Alburnett Schools’ kitchen?

The kitchen/commons area will be the first area getting addressed. Carolyn (head cook) and Lori (Asst. Head Cook) had questions about a two-line set-up so the architects recommended we visit Alburnett as they recently remodeled there area similar to what the are proposing for us.

What did you take away from the visit?

Our takeaways were: 1) We will have more space to work with; 2) the two line set-up can work without having to hire more staff; 3) we will be able to serve students much faster than our current set-up; 4) we will have more opportunity to provide different foods; 5) community usage will significantly increase.; and 6) we may need to explore a lunch computer program for efficiency.

Will you be visiting other schools and, if so, what schools and for what purpose?

At this time we have no other visits planned. I would like to visit Charles City as they designed a new school for better collaboration and partnerships. This has nothing to do with our remodel but more to do with instructional practices and equipping our classrooms.

Anything else you’d like to add?

As we get more information to share we will add that to our school website.
