John Fredrick Byers, 89, of Wauwatosa, formerly of Prairie du Chien, went to be with Our Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017. 

 

John was a Steamfitter for and with Steamfitters Union Local 601 for 60 years in the Milwaukee area and was a lifelong resident there. He was a military veteran of the United States Army Air Corp as a Fireman. 

 

John was an avid fisherman, gardener and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved attending the Brewers games at Miller Park.

 

He is survived by his four children Ronald W. Byers, Tomah; Michael J. Byers, La Crosse; Cheryl A. Byers, La Crosse; and Gregory J. Byers (Lisa), Sauk City. He is also survived by three brothers, Lloyd (Eileen), Texas; Thomas (Lou), Minneapolis; and Timothy (Nancy), California; one sister, Lucille Doro (Carl), of Brown Deer; many nieces; nephews; and a special nephew John Doro. John had six grandsons, Christopher, Michael, Daniel, Jesse, Jason and Aaron. 

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Byers; his parents William and Frances Byers; three brothers, Virgil Byers, Loren Byers, Bernard Byers; and two sisters Virginia Kniech and Mary Lou Shawley. 

 

A graveside service will be at Calvary Cemetery in Praire du Chien, at noon on Sept. 23, with last Military Rites. A family luncheon is to follow at Huckleberry’s Restaurant at 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien.
