Construction

moving fast

as start of school year approaches

By Ted Pennekamp

Work continues at a fast pace on various aspects of the $18.9 million construction project, but some areas inside the schools may not quite be finished in time for the start of the school year, according to discussion at the Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night.

“Things are moving at an expotential pace,” said District Administrator Robert Smudde, who noted that the second and third floors of the high school should be completed by Aug. 18 and the first floor by Aug. 25, with the possible exception of the new home economics room. Smudde said Bluff View Intermediate School will be ready to go, but there is no timeline for B.A. Kennedy.

Classes will start on Sept. 1, but the finishing touches may not be completed on the high school home economics room on the first floor by then, said Smudde and School Board President Christine Panka.

“When it’s done, it will be a world class kitchen,” said Smudde.

“Martha Stewart would be jealous,” said Panka.

Some bathrooms and the library are being remodeled in B.A. Kennedy. There is HVAC work being done in all three schools.

In other business, the board would like to hire a part-time Prairie du Chien Arts Center coordinator, and the position has been posted.

“We want a lively and vibrant Arts Center,” said Panka, who noted that five musicians from China will be coming to Prairie du Chien in September for a week-long Arts Midwest World Fest residency.

In further business:

•It was noted that $27,350 has been donated to the Blackhawk Fund by numerous donors.

•The high school track will be resurfaced at an estimated cost of $105,000. Originally, $85,000 was budgeted for the project, but some unforeseen problems have been found. The project is not part of the $18.9 million school facilities upgrade. It is estimated that the new track should last at least 10 years.

•There will be a meet and greet with new District Administrator Robert Smudde held in conjunction with the Prairie du Chien Country Club and the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce at the country club on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m.
