On July 24, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit was patrolling Highway 35 in Freeman Township. The deputy observed a 1989 Chevrolet 2500 operating southbound on Highway 35 and turn west onto Highway 82. The truck crossed the center lane and the driver’s door came completely open. The vehicle almost struck a guard rail and a vehicle head-on. The truck continued into Iowa. The deputy was unable to get across the heavy flow of traffic at the time.

A short while later, the deputy observed the truck operating from Highway 82 onto Highway 35. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver of the truck was identified as James W. McMillen, 63, De Soto. In speaking with McMillen, the deputy could detect an odor of alcohol. A search of the vehicle located an open container of intoxicants and a bottle of vodka.

McMillen is on probation for prior OMVIs. McMillen was subsequently arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant (11th offense).
