Leo J. Schlitter passed away June 30, at Gunderson-Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, at the age of 83. 

 

Leo was born May 26, 1934, in rural Monona, Iowa, to Lester Schlitter and DELillia Bollman. He was baptized at Ion Methodist Church. 

 

On Aug. 27, 1955, he was united in marriage to Alice Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union, four children were born. He later married Barbara Schier on Jan. 3, 1980. 

 

Leo grew up farming. He joined the Army in 1956, and was a Korean War veteran. He was a lifetime member of the Am Vet Post #27 in Monona, Iowa. He worked at John Deere and later started his own whitewashing business. Leo enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, bingo, gambling, gardening, fishing, and hunting.

 

Survivors include Alice and his four children: Luanne Miller (Steve), of McGregor, Iowa, Steve Schlitter, of Viroqua, Stan Schlitter, of Waterville, and Linda White (Dewey), of Smith Station, Ala.; eight grandchildren Tammy Campbell, Jeremy Miller, Denise Miller, Cassie Miller, Shane Fox, Nikki Schlitter, Amanda Schlitter and Megan White; 11 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; siblings: Ruth Jones (Earl) and Jim Schlitter (friend Linda Ambrose); and a sister-in-law Jo Schlitter.

 

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barb, brother Arno Schlitter and sister Violet Long.

 

His funeral was on July 7, at 11 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church (Swede Ridge), in McGregor, Iowa.
