Mercedes A. Lang, 93, of Wauzeka, passed away Wednesday, July 5, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

 

She was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Colby, the daughter of Alphonse and Gertrude (Kaiser) Schmitt. She married Leo Lang on June 23, 1943, in Winnetka, Ill. Together they farmed near Wauzeka and Mercedes later worked at the Prairie Convalescent Center and did some independent, in-home care. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Wauzeka and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary. Leo Sr. preceded her in death on April 9, 1983. 

 

She is survived by her sons, Leo (Georgia) Jr., of Spokane, Wash., Gerald (Shirley), of Aurora, Ill., Terry (Juanita), of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, and Lester (JoAnn), of Monona, Iowa; her daughters, Jane (Dick Heitman) Lang, of Waunakee, Patricia Bell, of Boscobel, Mary (Bob) Heideman, of Mineral Point, Suzette (Jerry) Ray, of Wauzeka, and Lisa (Bob) Shackett, of Beloit; her siblings, Germaine (Fritz) Redman, of Athens, Mark (Delores) Schmitt, of Colby, Mary Ann (Ted) Scanlon, of Ill., Verjean Kunze, of Abbotsford, Linus (Joan) Schmitt, of Wausau, and Tim (Suzy) Schmitt, of Blenker; 32 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter Rebecca; a son-in-law Greg Bell; two brothers; and six sisters.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 8, at noon at the Sacred Heart Church, Rev. Anandan Rajan officiating with burial in the Wauzeka Cemetery both in Wauzeka. Friends may call at the Sacred Heart Church Hall from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Sacred Heart Church or the Alzheimer’s Association. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
