The position of Prairie du Chien city administrator has been offered to Art Osten, contingent upon successful agreement of employment terms and drug test. As of Tuesday night’s regular council meeting, Osten had not yet accepted the position, according to interim administrator Tina Fuller.

The common council met Friday and Saturday for closed session interviews and, late Saturday morning, recommended Osten for the job. According to his LinkedIn profile, Osten has 16 years’ previous experience in municipal administration in Illinois at Indian Head Park, Mount Prospect, Oak Brook, Shorewood and Fox River Grove.

No word has been provided regarding when Osten may accept the offer and, if he does so, when he would begin work in Prairie du Chien.

Fuller has served in the interim since the March 3 departure of six-year administrator Aaron Kramer.

Fire chief retiring
Another big announcement in recent weeks was that Fire Chief Harry Remz has announced his retirement. This news was first accepted by the personnel committee and considered by the police and fire commission before the council. Remz’s resignation is effective Aug. 7.

“I’m still thinking about staying on the department if they want me to do that,” Remz stated.

Remz has been on the department for just under 20 years and will have served as chief for 10 years in August. He has committed a total of nearly 50 years to firefighting in his lifetime.

Other business
•The council approved a professional services agreement (PSA) Tuesday night with Vierbicher Associates for a recreational boating grant application to expand the existing Villa Louis boat ramp and make numerous riverfront improvements. If the city receives the grant, the award is not expected until Nov. 1, 2017.

•A resolution was approved officially creating and naming Rotary Park, which is located at the southeast corner of the roundabout at Blackhawk Avenue and Marquette Road. The Rotary Club has essentially “adopted” the park and plans to improve the property by adding structural features, flower beds and vegetation. The club used to maintain the flower pots alongside Marquette Road prior to the 2014 construction project there.

•Another PSA was approved between the city, library and Architectural Design Consultants concerning the library safe room.
