The Central boys’ golf team won a match against Postville at Elkader on April 10th with a score of 172-228. Medalist was Nick Sylvester with a 40 from Central. Runner-up was Sumner Smith, 42, also from Central. Other scores from Central were Andy Seeland, 49, and Caleb Jones, 51. Hayden Hansel shot a 52.

“Our sensational seniors played well, and our other players are working hard, so their scores will get better,” Coach Jamie Rodenberg said. A freshman who shot an improved round was Reegan Erickson with a 54.”

The team shot its best team score at Elkader against West Central on April 13th. Central shot a 166 team score to a 228 for West Central. Medalist was Central’s Sumner Smith with a 37. Warrior Nick Sylvester was runner-up with a 41. Andy Seeland had a 43, and Cayden Hansel shot a 45.

“Seeland was smoothly going along at one over through four holes and then had a sand challenge on 5 with a triple bogey,” Coach Rodenberg said. “Some players would have given up, but not Andy Seeland as he found a way to chip in for birdie on the sixth. Hansel, who has developed a strange knee ailment, fought through it for an excellent round of 45.”

“It was great to see a couple of our sophomore sensations come through with some quality rounds,” Coach Rodenberg continued. “Smith shooting a 37 is huge. He chipped and putted magnificently throughout the round. Then he battled through trees on the 9th and somehow punched his way through the forest to get a birdie. Sylvester did not have his greatest round but persevered with an impressive birdie on 9 to finish with fine score. A couple other positive scores were freshman Drake Dennler with a 54, and Lucas Bente, 56.”

“Central is 3-0 on the season but will be tested in the near future as we head on the road to South Winn on Thursday, April 20th,” Coach Rodenberg added. “Mental toughness will be the key the rest of the season.”
