Evan Teynor and Mariah Slaght

The Prairie du Chien High School Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian are Evan Teynor and Mariah Slaght, respectively.

Valedictorian Evan Teynor is the son of Eric and Colleen Teynor. He will attend the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., this fall, beginning his undergraduate degree with the goal of later getting into chiropractic school and earning a Doctor of Chiropractic degree.

While at the University of St. Thomas, Evan also plans on participating in track and field.

At Prairie du Chien High School, he is intensely active in sports, academic and other extra-curricular activities. These include Student Council (president), FFA (president), National Honor Society, Key Club, PALS (peer assistance leadership), the graduation committee, Science Club, soccer, basketball and track. Through his involvement, Evan has received many awards, such as student of the month, the AP Scholar Award, an academic letter and pin, varsity letters in three sports, and numerous captain appointments and all-conference recognitions.

“Ideally after college, I hope to open up my own chiropractic practice and build from there, and this accomplishment is a small step toward that big dream,” he said.

Salutatorian Mariah Slaght is the daughter of Shannon and Andy Bentien and the late Corie Slaght. In the fall, she  will start college at the University of Iowa, majoring in pre-dentistry. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, she would like to attend dental school to receive a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and become a general dentist.

Throughout high school, Mariah has been involved in Key Club, National Honor Society, PALS, graduation committee, a class officer position, cheer and dance. She was the student of the month in December and the top junior of the National Honor Society last year. She has been the class vice president for the past three years. As a member of the Blackhawk cheer and dance teams, she qualified for state all four years of high school. The cheer team was  state champions the past three years. Mariah has also received varsity letters and an academic pin and letter.

“After all of my schooling, I hope to work in a dental office for a few years before opening my own practice,” she said. “Being the salutatorian has already helped me become closer to achieving my future goals.”
