Sheila Kay Smith of Guttenberg died Feb. 20, 2017, of congestive heart failure at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

A church service was held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg with burial in the Kann Cemetery.

Sheila Kay Smith was born Sept. 10, 1946, the first child of Kenneth and Shirley (Harbaugh) Berns, at Garnavillo. The majority of her life she worked in the laundry department at the care center and the assisted living center. She was a hard-working, honest person who touched many lives in her 70 years.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Smith; two daughters, Suzette (Wes) Haugen of Hopkinton and Kim (Andy) Heitman of Guttenberg; seven grandchildren, Anthony (Abby) Heitman of Elkader, Alicia (Stacy) McClees of Cascade, Hunter (Candice) Heitman of Rapid City, S.D., Shelby (special friend Andrew Bacon) Haugen of Hopkinton, Chelsea Haugen of Edgewood, Molly (Matt) Kraus of Hopkinton, Dakota (special friend Brianna Bockenstedt) Haugen of Hopkinton; seven great-grandchildren, Bentley and Brant Kraus, Hudson Heitman, Jaxon Heitman, Ava, Westin and Wyatt McClees and a great-granddaughter on the way; step-children Peg (Mike) Wolfe of Welman, Deb (Mark) Smith of Guttenberg, Roger Smith of Guttenberg, Randy (Rachael) Smith of Walton, Ind.; several brothers and sisters, Kenneth (Wilma) Berns, Jr. of Delhi, Jennifer (Ed) Troester, Patt (Ron) Judkins, Kathy Berns, Carroll Berns, all of Guttenberg, Mary (Gene) Fabert and Tim Berns of Independence, Mo., Willie (Terry) Berns of Arlington, Wash., and Todd (Amanda) Berns of Hazelton; many nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Hollie.

She was preceded in death by her parentsy; a brother, Terry Berns; sisters, Deborah Berns, Gloria Nelson and Gladys (Bruce) Moser, and a niece, Shirley May Berns.
