Lewis W. Marfilius, 83, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, at the Crossing Rivers Health Care Center in Prairie du Chien. 

 

He was born June 14, 1933, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Clarence and Martha (McCarthy) Marfilius. He was a graduate of Prairie du Chien High School and later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He married Fay Schierholz on Nov. 14, 1957, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2004.

 

Lewis farmed most of his life and was a U.S. postal worker. He spent over 30 years as a volunteer for the Bridgeport Fire Department and served on several boards within the community including; the GC and F Co-Op which later became New Horizons and the Evergreen Cemetery. Lewis belonged to the Eagles Club Aerie 1502 and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. 

 

He enjoyed playing cribbage and cards at the Port and the Eagles club and was an avid Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badger fan. 

 

He is survived by his children, Cindy (Gary) Jelinek, of Prairie du Chien, Deb Camardo, of Mineral Point, Scott Marfilius and Joan (Patrick) Ries, both of Milton, and Bill (Cindy) Marfilius, of Prairie du Chien; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Gina, Megan, Austin, Patrick and Bryce; along with great grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan, Leah and Brady, his brother Lyle Marfilius, of Prairie du Chien; in-laws, Wanda (Bill) Check, Gerald (Barbara) Schierholz and Sandi Marfilius. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Richard Marfilius.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Military honors were accorded graveside by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Lewis name to the Freedom Honor Flight, P.O. Box 505, La Crosse, WI 54602.
