H. Dean Stegen, 86, of Strawberry Point, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at The Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. 

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, and also one hour before services at the church on Friday. There will also be a 7 p.m. Masonic Service on Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 10, at the Mission In Christ Lutheran Church (held at the United Methodist Church, Strawberry Point), conduced by Pastor Gary Burkhalter.

Interment will be at Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point.

Harley Dean Stegen was born Jan. 25, 1931, at home on the farm in Turkey River Junction, in Clayton County, the only son of Peter Melvin and Edith Hazel (Martin) Stegen.

Dean attended country school through the third grade and then completed his education in the Guttenberg schools, graduating with the Guttenberg Class of 1949. Dean continued to live in Turkey River Junction, until the age of 19.

On June 18, 1953, Dean was united in marriage to Mary Ann Nelsen in Atlantic. Three children were born to this union, Micheal Dean, Patricia Jo, and Daniel Peter. Together, Dean and Mary Ann spent the rest of their married lives near Strawberry Point.

Although Dean was first and foremost a farmer, he also worked at Frederick Hardware for a time, as a realtor for Rightway Realty, and in construction doing remodeling. Dean also was a Starmont School bus driver for thirty-eight years. 

Dean also enjoyed animals of all kinds including his herd of registered Herefords and many dogs over the years. His most recent companion was his dog Pickles.

Dean was a faithful member of Mission in Christ Lutheran Church, Pleasant Point Grange #2222, and Elkader Masonic Lodge #72.

Left to cherish Dean’s memory are his wife of 63 years, Mary Ann Stegen of Strawberry Point; two children, Micheal Dean (Sandy) Stegen of Phoenix, Ariz.; Patricia Jo (Kirk) Miller of Nebraska City, Neb.; five grandchildren, Erik (Lynn) Miller of Lincoln, Neb.; Bryan (Halley) Miller of Chino Valley, Ariz.; Leslie Miller of Nebraska City, Neb.; Anne Stegen and Jesse Stegen, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and seven great-grandchildren, Abraham, Hadassah, Ziesel, Frieda, and Aquila Miller all of Lincoln, Neb., and Lena and Gary Daniel Miller, both of Chino Valley, Ariz.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Pastor Daniel Stegen in 2011.
