Funding for repairs to the 100-year-old bandstand in Monona's city park is now nearly half accounted for, thanks to a $1,000 donation last week from the MFL Lions Club. The project will cost an estimated $32,000, said Monona Chamber and Economic Development (MCED) Executive Director Rogeta Halvorson, who's also part of the bandstand committee.

The city of Monona recently received a $10,000 grant from Wellmark, which will go toward the project. An ice cream social event held at the park last fall also netted around $1,000. Other grant and fundraising opportunities are in the works.

Among the list of bandstand repairs is a new floor, noted Elmer Marting, a member of the Monona Historical Society, who spoke to the city council about the bandstand at a meeting in July. The roof of the octagonally-shaped structure is also in need of shingles. In addition, the bandstand ceiling needs to be repainted and the block foundation repaired.

“It’s very important to us that the bandstand continues,” Marting said at that time, noting that the Monona Historical Society, along with the Clayton County Historic Preservation Commission, have offered to help with the project. They did not have the funds to completely cover the project, however.

The city of Monona has offered support (no specific amount, as of yet), but stated it was also unable to fully cover the bandstand repair costs.

Halvorson said repairs will hopefully begin in a few months.
