The Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree is always well attended, and the 67th annual event should be no exception.

67th Annual Prairie du Chien

Ice Fisheree is February 4 and 5

By Ted Pennekamp

The 67th Annual Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree will be held on Feb. 4-5. The event is headquartered at the Lakeview Marina Bar, three miles north of Prairie du Chien on County Road K.

The Ice Fisheree is sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Baseball, the Prairie du Chien Jaycees and Howe Printing.

The fisheree will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 5 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Weigh-ins are on Saturday 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. All fish must be weighed in by 2 p.m., Sunday.

The fisheree offers an outing for the whole family, fishing prizes and raffles. The fisheree will be held ice or no ice. Iowa residents may use their current year Iowa fishing license. Residents of other states will need a non-resident license to fish in Wisconsin.

Fishing is open for any waters in the Prairie du Chien area.

“It’s a great family event and there are prizes for everyone,” said Steve Sagedahl of American Legion Baseball. Sagedahl noted there should be plenty if ice this year and the fisheree should have a good turnout of enthusiastic anglers.

Lakeview Marina Bar personnel said some good catches of bluegill and perch have been reported in the days leading up to the fisheree. Interestingly enough, numerous walleyes have been caught as well lately on Gremore Lake, an area not usually known for walleyes through the ice. The water is about four feet higher than normal, and this has been attributed as the reason for the walleyes. One fisherman recently hauled in five walleyes in one outing. Most anglers have been setting up more towards the west side of Gremore Lake during the last several days.

Six tagged money fish will be released in Gremore Lake. One fish will be worth $5,000. Two are worth $2,500 apiece and three will be $1,200 each. The tagged fish are bluegill and perch.

Cash prize winners of $600 or more may be required to take polygraph exams as part of the contest requirements. In the event deception is detected, the entrant’s prize will be forfeited. If a tagged fish is caught, it must immediately be brought in for registration. Tagged fish must be registered at the weigh-in site to be eligible to win.
