Thor Fikso Jr. of Elkader, IA moved on from this life on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at age 91.

Thor was born September 10, 1925, in Garber, IA as the second of two children born to Thor and Ruth (Wathen) Fisko. Following an active childhood as the ever-irritating younger brother to his sister Helen, Thor enlisted in the Army. He arrived in Europe on August 11, 1944, exactly 33 years, to the day, that his father, Thor Fisko Sr., arrived in the United States from Norway. He worked as a Field Lineman in Northern France and Central Europe during the war.

On January 2, 1947, Thor married Barbara Wilson. The couple settled in Elkader where they welcomed two daughters. Thor worked as an independent contractor eventually building bridges and culverts throughout Iowa. Stating he was just as proud of his daughters as others were their sons the side of his truck proudly proclaimed “Thor Fisko Jr. and Daughters Construction.”

Thor employed many people over the years and assisted some to begin their own businesses. He enjoyed people, extending a helping hand, and his work, stating that it wasn’t work when you enjoyed what you were doing so much. He continued to work, coming full circle back to small cement jobs in the community, in his 70s.

Thor was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Martha Kimball; and sister, Helen Knoke. He is survived by daughter, Thora Fisko, grandson, James Westphall, and loving partner Elaine Shaw and her phenomenal family.

In celebration of his life and love of others, please direct memorials to the charity of your choice in his name.
