Virgil A. Butteris, 90, of Prairie du Chien passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

 

Virgil was born May 1, 1926, in Richland Center, the son of Clarence and Nora (Christopher) Butteris, and grew up on the family farm near Highland. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He was married to his devoted wife and partner Elizabeth Coffey on June 18, 1949, in Dodgeville. He was a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Platteville, taught agriculture at Barneveld High School and went on to receive his Masters in Dairy Science from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Virgil served as the UW-Extension agricultural agent in Clark County before moving to Prairie du Chien where he served as the Crawford County agent from 1956 until his retirement. 

 

He spent a lifetime of diligent service to agricultural causes including soil and water quality, the city of Prairie du Chien, Crawford County and the Mississippi River. This included his memberships on the Crawford County Board, Crawford County Fair Board, Wisconsin State Fair Board and Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission. He was also the county representative to Couleecap. He belonged to the American Legion and the Eagles Club Aerie 1502 and was an avid gardener. 

 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Butteris of Prairie du Chien; his sons, Greg (Connie) of Little Chute, and Jeff (Janet), of Westby; his grandchildren Jerrod, Mali, Jacob, Jessica, Emily, Michael and Katie; his great grandchildren, Hudson, Ella, Hadley, Anders, Griffin, Joel and Ashton. 

 

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Angela; his parents; a brother Laverne; and a sister Fern. 

 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, with Reverends Joe Irvin and Kyle Svennungsen officiating, and burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Military rites will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
