Both sides (three lanes) of Highway 18 are now open in the construction zone of the Highway 18-60 project in the town of Bridgeport. In the near future, all four lanes are expected to be open.

Both sides of Highway 18 open in construction zone

Recently, both sides of Highway 18 have opened for traffic as part of the Highway 18-60 Project in the town of Bridgeport.

As of Friday, both lanes heading from near Walmart towards the Wisconsin River Ridge were open. One lane was open for motorists heading from the Wisconsin River Bridge towards Prairie du Chien.

“In the near future all four lanes should be open to traffic,” said John Gantenbein of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. “In the next couple of weeks, the bridge contractor will finish his work on the eastbound lanes near Walmart and then the general contractor will need to connect the roadway to the two ends of the bridge. If Mother Nature cooperates, all four lanes will be open to traffic by the middle of next month.”

Gantenbein said workers will be tearing out the median crossover near the golf course in the next couple of weeks.  Most of the pavement marking is completed, and by the early part of next week, most of the traffic control drums will be removed from the westbound lanes excluding the bridge area across from Walmart.

Next spring, most of the work will be concentrated to the median and east end of the project.

“Work on the east end will be from the north end of the Wisconsin River Bridge to where the concrete was completed this year (approximately 500 feet north),” Ganten bein said. “This will be done half at a time and traffic will be down to one lane controlled by traffic signals so that the pavement can be removed and replaced.”

Gantenbein said work in the median will be to finish the areas between the backs of curb and areas that had to be used to maintain free flow of traffic this year. Some lane closures will be needed to finish this work.

“Please remember that the roadwork signs will remain up until all work is completed next spring and to be mindful of workers that are still working,” Gantenbein said.
