PdCHS Drama Hawks entertaining audiences with ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

If you missed the “Little Shop of Horrors” presented by the Prairie du Chien High School Drama Hawks, you have a few more chances to see the horror comedy rock musical in the high school’s little theater: Friday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The cast and crew of about 25 have put on four spectacular shows already and audiences are loving it.
“A lot are quite familiar with the story,” Director Phil Stiemke said. “We did a short concert-type presentation a few years ago and some of this year’s kids were there for that. Some of them have a lot to do in this one.”
“Little Shop of Horrors” follows the story of meek flower shop assistant Seymour, who pines for co-worker Audrey. During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling flower shop. After Seymour feeds Audrey’s abusive boyfriend, Orin, to the plant after Orin’s accidental asphyxiation, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant.
“It’s quite entertaining, of course, with the man-eating plant,” Stiemke added. “The music is very fun; it’s very Motown and sort of doo-wop.”
Stiemke said the musical appeals to a variety of ages and, though the storyline is not as vulgar or repulsive “as what we see on TV,” parents are advised to use discretion with very young children.
