Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, is now less than a week away. Aside from the high-profile presidential election, there are many hotly-contested races at both the state and local levels that voters will be asked to settle.

At the federal level, for president and vice president, voters will choose between Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine, of the Democratic Party, and Donald J. Trump and Michael R. Pence, of the Republican Party, as well as several third party tickets. They include Gary Johnson and Bill Weld, of the Libertarian Party; Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka, of the Iowa Green Party; Lynn Kahn and Jay Stolba, of the New Independent Party Iowa; Darrell L. Castle and Scott N. Bradley, of the Constitution Party; Dan R. Vacek and Mark G. Elworth, of the Legal Marijuana Now Party; Gloria La Riva and Dennis J. Banks, of the Party for Socialism and Liberation; Rocky Roque De La Fuente and Michael Steinberg; and Evan McMullin and Nathan Johnson.

For U.S. Senate, incumbent Charles E. Grassley, a Republican, faces off against Democrat Patty Judge, Libertarian Charles Aldrich, New Independent Party candidate Jim Hennager and Michael Luick-Thrams.

In the race for U.S. Representative of District 1, Monica Vernon, of the Democratic Party, takes on incumbent Republican Congressman Rod Blum.

Incumbent Michael Breitbach, a Republican, will look to hold his State Senate District 28 seat against Democratic challenger Jan Heikes and Libertarian challenger Troy Hageman.

For State House District 56, Democratic incumbent Patti Ruff faces off against Republican Kristi Hager.

At the county level, three people—Democrat Joleen M. Jansen, Republican Ray Peterson and Steve Doeppke—fight to fill the Clayton County Supervisor seat vacated by Larry Gibbs.

Jennifer Garms, of the Democratic Party, and Deborah Scott, of the Republican Party, challenge one another to become Clayton County Auditor, following the retirement of Dennis Freitag.

Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi, a Republican, runs unopposed to retain his position.

Several non-partisan seats also need to be filled. In Mendon Township, James Donlon is up for township clerk, while Allen A. Adney is on the ballot for trustee. In Monona Township, Allan W. Troester is up for trustee. Rick Blietz is up for re-election as a trustee of Giard Township, while Aarica Berns looks to become Farmersburg Township’s clerk and Harold A. Henning a trustee. 

Three Clayton Soil and Water Conservation District seats need to be filled, with Gerry L. Ommen, Ron D. Kaiser and Owen K. Sylvester running to be commissioners.

Linda Orr, Deb Schulte and Julie Bergan are on the ballot for the county’s agricultural extension council.

On the judicial section of the ballot, voters will be asked if they would like to retain Brent R. Appel, Mark S. Cady and Daryl L. Hecht for the state supreme court. For the court of appeals, voters will select if they would like to retain Richard H. Doyle, Amanda Potterfield, Gayle Vogel and David R. Danilson. Voters will also be asked if they would like to retain Michael J. Shubatt as district judge.

Polls will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Voters in the Mendon Precinct will vote at the Marquette Community Center, 120 North St. Voters should note that this is a change from the McGregor Public Library, in order to accommodate a higher expected turnout. In the Giard-Luana-Monona Precinct, voters will go to the Monona Community Center at 104 S. Egbert St. Farmersburg-Wagner Precinct voters will go to the polls at the Farmersburg Community Center, 4 E. Adams St.
