This sign, made by Design Homes, will be erected along Cliffwood Drive, at the building site for the animal shelter.

It’s been nine years in the making.

The Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter board and volunteers are ready to break ground for their highly-anticipated animal shelter at 460 Cliffwood Dr. on the north side of Prairie du Chien. The official groundbreaking will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. Cake and coffee will be served; parking will be allowed along Cliffwood for the event.

Plans are for Top Notch Construction to build the exterior shell of the shelter in the coming months on 3.4 acres of property in the city’s business park.

Simultaneously, RABAS is also embarking on a capital campaign Nov. 1, 2016 through Jan. 31, 2017, from which they hope to raise funds toward furnishing the interior of the facility.

“We need to raise another $400,000 for the interior of the building,” said Cheryl Statz, RABAS president.

“We’ve always felt, once people see it built, they’ll believe. We’re hoping this will bring in donations a lot faster (than the past nine years),” added RABAS Vice President Bev Pozega. “We’ve had a lot of fundraisers to get this far—it’s been a lot of cookies, poker runs, shoe drives and generous donations.”

A pledge card has been drawn up with all of the details of the capital campaign. Some individuals close to RABAS will be personally contacted during the campaign and an informational mailing with the pledge card will be done as well.

Design Homes has donated a sign for RABAS to place on Cliffwood Drive, denoting the location as the home of the future animal shelter. Board members and volunteers, as well as many other concerned citizens, are happy to see the groundbreaking has finally arrived. The continuous postings of stray dogs, feral cats, surrenders, lost cats and dogs looking for homes are evident in the area.

“We firmly believe that every animal has the right to a safe and loving environment and that every animal has the potential to make a difference in people’s lives,” Statz said. “Currently, there are very few temporary homes for these animals while they await their forever homes. Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter would provide that.”
