The Parkinson’s Awareness Group of Clayton County is planning its first annual walk-a-thon to be held in Guttenberg on Saturday, Oct. 1,  at 10 a.m.

Registration will be at 9 a.m. in the north gazebo in Ingleside Park on River Park Drive, Guttenberg. A lunch stand will be available offering sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

Proceeds from the event will be used to establish a local Parkinson’s support group. The support group is planning to host meetings throughout the year and bring in presenters who can provide useful resources to both Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers. A portion of the money will be donated to Team Hope (National Parkinson Foundation), which funds promising research to find the causes of and a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Nearly one million Americans suffer from Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative brain disorder for which there is no cure. This complex disease affects speech and motor functions, and leads to slow physical movement, muscle rigidity, tremors, and dementia in its advanced stages.

"We are hoping this event will unite the community and inspire people to make a difference in the lives of those who suffer from this disease," say organizers. "Join us! Together, we will raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease research."
