Marjorie “Peg” Chunat, 94 years, of Prairie du Chien, died Saturday, Sept. 17, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

Peg was born July 15, 1922, in Hannibal (Taylor County); the daughter of William C. and Alta (Lemke) Jones. She graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1940. She was married to Gilbert (Gib) Herold and had two sons; they later divorced. On Sept. 29, 1946, she was united in marriage with Orlyn Chunat at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wauzeka. 

During the War, Peg worked at the Badger Ordinance Powder Plant, near Baraboo; then at National Decorated Metals, and at Spec’s Liquor Store both in Prairie du Chien. She later worked at Hamann’s Variety Store; and then at 3M Company for twenty-five years. Peg was a hard worker and was dedicated to her job and family and enjoyed preparing meals for family and visitors. 

She was an avid gardener and during the Crawford County Fair, Peg’s pies became a specialty item. Peg and Orlyn were members of the “500” Card Club for about 50 years and enjoyed Square Dancing with their many friends in the Wauzeka area. She loved living at her home in the Gran Grae Valley.

Peg is survived by two sons, Ronald (Mary) Herold of Onalaska; Gary (Janet) Herold of Madison; one brother, John Jones of Prairie du Chien; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and her special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orlyn, on July 31, 2015; one son, Michael David Chunat; one grandson, Brian Ronald Herold, and two sisters, Ruth Pinkert and (Beulah) Mae Hazen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Wauzeka.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the United Methodist Church in Wauzeka. The Rev. Lynn Schreck will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time, Saturday, at the church. Interment will be at the Wauzeka Cemetery. 

The Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien is in charge of arrangements.
