Vernon Lee Cherne, 72, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at his residence.

Visitation was Monday, Sept. 5, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 6, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Interment was at St, Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Vernon was born on Oct. 3, 1943, in Farmersburg, the son of Albert and Bernadette (Berns) Cherne. He graduated from Guttenberg Community School with the class of 1961. Vernon served in the United States Navy from July 8, 1964, serving on the U.S.S. Andrew Jackson until his honorable discharge on June 22, 1971, after which he returned to the family farm near Osterdock.

Vernon married Joyce Bayliss on June 3, 1972, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Vernon was a 4H Leader for the Jefferson GoHawks, and served on several county and local committees including: Clayton County 4H Youth Committee, Clayton County 4H Foundation, Clayton County Pork Producers, German/Heritage Mutual Insurance Board, Clayton County Zoning, USDA Farm Service Agency, and St. Mary’s Planning and Finance. Vernon has been honored by the Pork Producers, Cattlemen, Soil Conservation and inducted into the Iowa 4H Hall of Fame in 2015 for Outstanding Service and Dedication to the youth 4H program. Vernon most enjoyed the farming life and being with his family, friends, and especially his seven grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Joyce; his four children, Eric (Jennifer), Julie (Nick) Hansel, Amy (friend, Andrew) and Scott (Sarah); his seven grandchildren, Mariah, Lauren, Brooke, Reid, Cade, Grant and Lane; his seven siblings, Judy (Howard) Hafner, Beth (Patsy), Alice (Darrell) Baumgartner, Diana (Fred) Kirby, Kay, Mike (Nancy) and Pat Cherne; and his mother-in-law, Rosella Bayliss.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy and father-in-law, Leonard Bayliss.

In lieu of flowers and all styles of sympathy, memorials have been requested and they may be given to either Clayton County 4H Foundation or Dollars for Scholars.
