Janice West, 76, of Strawberry Point, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, surrounded by her family at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, following a lengthy illness.

Janice was born to Romanus and Darlene Zapf on February 15, 1940, in Littleport, Iowa. She was baptized at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Littleport, and later was confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport. Janice received her education in the Littleport and Elkader school districts.

Janice married Gene West at Peace United Church in Elkader on May 21, 1958. To this union six children were born. She was a devoted wife and mother and provided in-home daycare while her children were young. She later was employed by Central Community Hospital, Elkader, for 11 years and by the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home for 19 years as a housekeeper and supervisor, until her retirement.

Janice enjoyed cooking, family reunions, dancing and listening to country music and visiting with her friends and neighbors. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy.

Janice is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Gene West of Strawberry Point, and her children Vickie Merritt, Strawberry Point; Edward (Lianne) West, Mankato, MN; Tim (Deb) West, Strawberry Point; Tina (Robbie Wedo) West, Monona; Terry (Janet) West, Auburndale, FL; and 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her twin sister, Joyce (Doug) Kuehl, Strawberry Point, and sisters Jean Reinhardt, Strawberry Point; June (Alfred) Pritchard, Edgewood; Jenny Schuldt, Edgewood; and Jerri Baker, Elkader. Sisters- and brothers- in-law:  Kenneth Nading, Strawberry Point; Marilyn and Luther Pugh, Elgin; Arlene West, Farmersburg; Vi and Stanley Erickson, Elkader; Pearl Dunkel, Strawberry Point; and Orville West, North Liberty; her aunt Helen Nading, Riverside, CA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Tammy West; grandson, Michael Nading; and great-grandson, William Joseph Nading; brother, Joel Zapf, sister-in-law; Marge Nading, brothers-in-law James Reinhardt, Don (Chopper) Schuldt and Jerry West.

She will be sadly missed by many and her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2016, at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport, with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. Interment followed at Union Cemetery, Littleport. Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elkader and one hour before the service at the church on Friday.
