A property trade that is likely to move Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter’s prospective building site to Prairie du Chien’s North Gateway Business Park was unanimously approved by the common council following closed session of a specially scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

According to terms of the trade agreement, the city would take possession of the animal shelter’s land located southwest of the intersection of 22nd Street and Campion Boulevard, while RABAS would take ownership of the land mainly south of the intersection of Cliffwood Drive and Vena Court. Also, the city would make a $15,000 contribution toward the construction of the new animal shelter.

Additionally, the city and RABAS agreed to negotiate, within one year of the land trade, for construction and operation of a pet park at the business park animal shelter location. The city has had a number of pet park discussions in the past, with land on St. Feriole Island once considered for such an attraction.

The trade agreement, according to minutes from post-closed session action, is contingent on plan commission approval of a conditional use permit for the operation of the animal shelter in the new location. It is also contingent on the Cabela’s releasing the restrictive covenants on the property.

The two acres of land RABAS is trading for the city property was donated to the organization by Steve and Lynda Welter.

City Administrator Aaron Kramer said Wednesday morning that the city does not have immediate plans for the land it would receive in the trade. He said, several years ago, the city looked at building a detention pond in that location for purposes of flood mitigation, but that is not a consideration at this time.
