The Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Woodman Boat Landing Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13, just before 4 p.m., for a report of a possible drowning. Witnesses stated a man identified as Sherik Shah, 28, of Saginaw, Mich., originally from India, was on a sandbar kneeling in the water when the sandbar gave way. The male did not know how to swim and was calling out for help. His friend heard the yell for help and entered the water in an attempt to save him.

A female kayaker saw the friend struggling in the water and was able to get the friend aboard her kayak, according to witness statements. She saw the Shah go under water and be swept away by the current.

Assisting at the scene were Boscobel Fire Department, Boscobel EMS, Boscobel Police Department, the Wyalusing State Park Ranger, Wisconsin DNR, Mount Hope Fire Department, Prairie du Chien Fire Department, Glen Haven Fire Department, Wauzeka Fire Department, Bridgeport Fire Department, Blue River Fire Department, Bagley Fire Department, Lancaster Fire Department, Grant County Emergency Management, Grant County Technical Rescue, Cassville Fire Department, Woodman First Responders, and the Lafayette County Dive Team.

Shah was found at about 8 p.m. and was pronounced dead by the Grant County Coroner.

In a news release about the drowning, Grant County Chief Deputy Jack Johnson shared his appreciation to the assisting agencies for their quick response and hard work.
