This Saturday, July 16, the Children’s Advisory Board, will be hosting the Prairie du Chien Skateboard Park’s first-ever competition in conjunction with the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department’s Fort Fun Family Summer Olympic Games.
The competition will begin at 10:30 a.m. and all who would like to participate in the event are strongly encouraged to arrive and be registered prior to 10:15 a.m., said Lorie Floyd, organizer of the competition.
“It’s going to be a fun competition. It’ll be judged on the use of the course, the flow of the routine, the difficulty, and the consistency,” said Floyd.
There will be two waves of the competition. First, a 10 and under group, followed by everyone else. Each participant will be given three runs, each of two minutes. “They also have to sign waivers and they must wear helmets,” said Floyd, stressing that the safety of everyone is important.
Floyd hopes that many people will come to the competition. “Come for a fun time and show us your stuff,” she said.
Floyd explained that she’s very excited about the day because it will give people a chance to come and see what the skateboard park already is, along with what they hope it will be. “What we have now is phase I of the project. Phase II will double the size of the park to include eight new features and more open space,” added Floyd.
The new open space will help accommodate beginning skateboarders as well as allow more room for tricks. The new features will include two quarter pipes, a bank ramp, a banana berm, two bat wings, a skate bench and a grindbox.
In order to finish phase II of the project, approximately $70,000 will be needed. Floyd hopes that the group will have collected $45,000-48,000 by the end of this event.
