Michael Richard Obmascher passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 28, after a brief fight with cancer.

Mike was born Aug. 23, 1951 in Prairie du Chien, to Richard “Obie” and Mary Lou (Coorough) Obmascher. He attended St. Gabriel’s Elementary, Campion Jesuit High School, and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School with the class of 1969. He went to UW-Madison, and became more active musically and politically. His various early occupations included mail carrier, rental property manager, truck driver, home builder, welder, and alternative energy installer. For over 20 years Mike was a master cabinet maker, using his wood working skills and artisanship both professionally and personally. He was especially proud of the work he did rebuilding his entire house. Mike was a life-long musician, known for his 12-string bass guitar. Since 1967 he was playing professional gigs at an eclectic range of venues that included bars, a “go-go” club, the Villa Louis, Elkader Opera House, and the big stage at Arnolds Park. His last performance was June 17, with the duo Mississippi Blue. For nearly 40 years Mike collaborated with his musical partner and best friend, Dave Polodna, most recently producing great “punch acoustic” music as Mississippi Blue. Mike also enjoyed playing with a variety of other musicians, too numerous to mention individually. Mike was a political junkie, and was hopeful about the outcome of the 2016 elections (go Hillary). Yet, he retained the ability to listen to opposing views. In memory of Mike, please vote, and vote thoughtfully. But Mike’s family was the most important thing in his life. His daughters were the loves of his life. Among other things, he shared his love and skill for turning wood into amazing projects with both Kerri and Kelli. He enjoyed playing music with his brother and cousins, and passed on his love of music to his grandson Nathan. One of his greatest joys was an annual birthday camping trip with all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. For nearly 12 years Mike was the best husband to his third wife, Kristi. Despite an initial dislike for one another, they found true love. A love that is strong, will continue, and made them both better people. Mike was loved and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Kristi; daughters Kerri (Leon) Lissner and Kelli (Chad Brown) Obmascher; eight grandchildren, Megan Abey, Makenzie Abey, Erika Bailey, Madalyn Abey, Kyle Abey, Nathan Bailey, Evan Lissner and Olivia Lissner; and two great grandchildren, Gavin and Tatum all from Evansville. He is also survived by his siblings Bill (Darcy) Obmascher from Evansville, and Luanne (Dave) Black from Amarillo, Texas; and her children Sara (Benjamin) Ysasaga, Matt Black, and Andrew (Jessica) Black.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, with a service at 7 p.m. at Ward-Hurtley Funeral Home Evansville. A Celebration of Life will also be held in Prairie du Chien, in August. A notice will be placed in the Courier Press with more details at a later date.

Condolences may be expressed at Wardhurtley.com
