For the Seitz family, the transition to living in Guttenberg started the same way as many before. In 2012, Scott Seitz and his wife, Deb, purchased a home on Abel Island with the intention of retiring to the leisurely, tranquil isle in the years to come. Four years later, they find themselves opening a family business.

Anchored Storage, LLC, is a 41-unit self-storage facility offering 14 11x35’ bays with 12x10' doors for storage of boats or campers; 16 10x20’ bays similar in size to single-stall garage; and 11 5x10’ bays for campground residents needing to store lawn furniture or other small items, locals who need more closet space, or parents who find junior moving back home.

“We loved the Guttenberg community, so we decided to retire a couple of years early,” said Seitz (pronounced ‘sites’), who relocated to Abel Island permanently in 2014. “We needed storage when we first moved to town.”

When their son Chad, of Eldora, suggested starting a storage business, his parents were enjoying retirement with their 12 grandchildren, who keep them busy boating and enjoying life on the river. Six months later, without knowing about his brother’s idea, their son Aaron, of Clive, approached them with the same proposal. That’s when Seitz decided to start doing feasibility research.

In giving all their children a chance to get in on the new business, the Seitz family built a well-rounded team of entrepreneurs to start Anchored Storage. Chad is a partner in OEL Construction Services in Eldora and has helped guide the building of the new storage facility. Aaron is a senior associate at Financial Architects in Clive and keeps the books for the new business. Curt, systems engineer at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, set up a website, communications, and all electronics involved in the storage business. Seitz himself worked for 27 years in sales at United Suppliers, covering a quarter of the state in southwest Iowa.

“The boys get along well together,” said Seitz. “They all have their own ideas and expertise in so many areas.”

The Seitz family has used almost exclusively local contractors in building the new facility, located in the industrial park on north Highway 52 at 131 N. Hill Drive. Save for son Chad doing the concrete work, they’ve hired Tracy Radabaugh of Guttenberg to do the construction, Meuser Lumber for materials and site design, Ray’s Excavating in Edgewood to prepare the site, and have received financing from Fidelity Bank and insurance from Tujetsch Agency. Their realtor was Parker Realty.

Anchored Storage expects to have units available by mid-summer, and is currently taking reservations for bays of all sizes. Leases will be month-to-month, and will include access to a 55-foot turnaround area suitable for backing large vehicles and trailers.
