Anthony “Tony” Schmelzer, 60, of Elkader, died Monday, April 25, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic in Iowa City, Iowa. Tony was born on June 28, 1955, to Joseph and Anita (Berns) Schmelzer in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1973. Tony was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa. 

Tony worked construction in his younger years, and worked for Nordic Forge in Guttenberg for 32 years. He dearly loved working with the St. Joseph Alley Cat Crafters in Elkader and having visions of artwork and then creating his visions in many different ways. Tony enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, storytelling with friends and family and being in Hartley, Iowa on the farm with his son-in-law, Brian. Most of all, Tony enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. 

Tony is survived by his wife, Nancy of Elkader, Iowa; three children, Vicki Funk of Maryland, Becky (Brian) Pippert of Hartley, Iowa and Pam (Will) Hoth of Elkader; five grandchildren, Zoey Nailor, Chloe Nailor, Tasha (special friend, Riley Beyer) Hoth, Aaron Hoth and Megan (special friend, Wyatt Albert) Pippert; one great-grandchild, Zoey Beyer; his mother, Anita Schmelzer of Garnavillo; 11 siblings, Sam (Sarah) Schmelzer of Dubuque, Mary Schmelzer of Iowa City, Michael (Sharon) Schmelzer of Garnavillo, Tom (Diane) Schmelzer of Edgewood, Tim (Kathy) Schmelzer of Elkader, Susan Schmelzer of Garnavillo, Margaret (Bruce) Matt of Lone Tree, Iowa, Donna (Kurt) Franks of Postville, Ellen (Jo) Claey of Iowa City, Anna (Dave) Elder of Iowa City and Laurie (Jim) Orth of Winona, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles.  

Tony was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Schmelzer and one brother, Dan Schmelzer.

Visitation was Friday, April 29, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elkader, Iowa, with a one-hour visitation before services at the church on Saturday.. A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa, with Rev. Paul Peters as the celebrant. at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo, Iowa Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo..
